Nestled in the beautiful hills outside Bath, our brand-new English vineyard, planted in May 2023, is taking root. We are thrilled to share this incredible venture with you!

A new Somerset vineyard

Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier are the stars of our vineyard. They are coping with the unusual British summer this year, and we're busy ensuring they thrive. Shoot selection and vine tying are well underway, laying the foundation for good root growth this year.

The story so far...

Sitting just to the north-east of Bath, the recently planted Tennygrove Vineyard was inspired by watching the movie 'A Good Year' at least annually for the last decade. When Ally and Rupert found themselves with land to spare at their farm with south-facing slopes and rich, loamy soil, there was no option but to plant vines. Tennygrove is poised to produce exceptional grapes that to produce English Sparkling Wine and Rose.

Managed by a team of experienced viticulturists, Tennygrove Vineyard is just entering its first growing season, and we are working carefully to preserve the natural beauty and fertility of the land. From careful soil management to precise pruning and harvesting techniques, every step of the process is designed to maximize the potential of the grapes and produce wines that truly showcase the unique terroir of Somerset.

As the vines mature, we look forward to sharing the fruits of our labour with you!

We spent the morning planting out the rest of our orchard with Lewis and Jess from Forest of Avon Trust @forestofavon The orchard is shown on maps dating back to 1608 as we were once a part of the old Shockerwick House Estate (formerly known as Hussey Court) - a beautiful Georgian stately home that looks just like a dolls house at the bottom of the hill. We planted 12 new trees - apple, quince, plum and apricot, all fast growth and good canopy for biodiversity and wildlife. I love reusing materials so we had @nakedsprout.uk boxes as our weed barriers - perfect as they come with no plastic and are 100% biodegradable. The history of a 5 month old English vineyard in 9 seconds! We had to get permission from Natural England to plant a vineyard into ancient English grassland, which was hand planted (by machine and a great team of guys) to preserve the grasses and flowers 🌾🌼🌱 and of course the creepy crawlies 🐛🐜🐝🪲🐞🦗 We've planted mostly Chardonnay, with Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier and hope to be making our own English Sparkling in a couple of years on the outskirts of Bath on the border of Somerset and Wiltshire. We are delighted to announce the arrival of two more tiny peachick🐣🦚 hatchlings, who put in their first appearance yesterday! The other peacocks weren't so friendly (as you can see from the video - ouch) so they were safely transported to a stables with a nice warm lamp to get them going. Putting on vine guards is hard work! I spent about 3 hours at it this week and ended up with grazed hands and bruised fingers so I gratefully let the professionals get on with the job! Its been a busy day, trying to madly finish the rubble removal for the vineyard as planting has been brought forward to Saturday... the count down is on! We are P(planting) - 3 and jobs remaining include: - filling the rubble hole - soil aeration - last mow Then over to the planting team! The dandelions are out, the fencing is in, and now we are waiting for the subsoiling to make sure the vine roots have somewhere to grow and establish properly.
